The modern surname can be found as Huncote, Hunnicot, Hunnicutt, Honeycote and Huncoot. Sarah Hunicut married George Stockall at St. Antholin’s, Budge Row in London in December 1612. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Elena Huncoate, married Richard Thorpp, which was dated 11th November 1543, at Whalley, Lancashire, during the reign of King Henry V111, known as Bluff King Hal, 1509 – 1547.

    The Holnicote Estate is the area of England in West Somerset mentioned in the Domesday Book of William the Conqueror, circa 1080. Somerset is the first county east of Devon, where there are many place names ending in ‘cote’ or ‘cott’. The names Hannacott and Honicott appear in the records of churches in the area going back to the 16th century.
